Panos Kyparissis

                                                     Michelle Torrez,Ways of Sitting II

 LIGHTDRINKER

You come to consume me
knowning I am so thirsty for you
like a faun glass of water
traps the sunlight in its scarcity

You come
as you came for the first time
eyelids closed
wasting ineffable beauty
in front of my timid eyes

I choose with certainty the absolute
to encounter
and with the very certainty to fail

Despite the anabolics for the pain
I choose my hearing unguarded
to your clothes' return

With all the wounds to strike me
with those I shall withdraw.

Panos Kyparissis, 2015

En français

I wish your french and my french were perfect
cause only in this language
my complaint would have
the sound of a raindrop
the colour of sadness
the scent of an absence
in a most precise, precious way

Chryssanthie Polyzou

En français

Menelaos Lountemis

Nikiforos Lytras, The Waiting (1895-1900)

Waiting

I am waiting for you. Don't ask why.
Don't ask why somebody waits
Who has nothing to wait for
But he still waits.

Because if he stops waiting
It is as if he stops seeing
As if he stops looking at the sky
He stops hoping
He stops being alive.

It's unbearable... It's bitter
To reach slowly to the shore
Without being a castaway
 Nor a savior
 Just a wreck.

Menelaos Lountemis

Fernand Khnopff - Un Rideau Bleu - 1909

(...)

If I ever die,

don't you ever believe that my love for you is finished:

think that it will wait for you,

in other senses describing your beauty.

Maria Laina , Hereafter,1970

(...)

Vyron Leontaris

                                                                  Anna Aden, Sofia

(...)  From one loneliness to another we pass - that 's all,
we leave the hands we used to hold till now
(without even knowing they had abandoned us
years before)
asking for other hands meant to abandon us too
-- What kind of hands are they supposed to be?

At least  that kind of loneliness you were used to
You already knew the walls, the corners, not to stumble in the darkness
You knew how not to fall upon the wounds of others
You knew the steps of "nobody"
And the  howling of desire dragging  in your guts.
At least you knew that kind of loneliness
why are you after another?

Vyron Leontaris, Maria by the window

– μα τι χέρια να ‘ναι αυτά;

Haris Vlavianos

Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida - Beach

WHAT EXACTLY IS POETRY?

You are driven to a deserted beach
All the way your eyes
are blindfolded in a white handkerchief.
You finally unfold them
and you see the sea
spreading peacefully
to the end of the horizon.
You suddenly close them
and you are laying
on a rock,
gazing bewildered
the starry sky.
You open them again
and in front of you
unfolds a plain
sown with daises
You lean and pick one randomly
Its petals form
 - what else ?
 your name.

Haris Vlavianos

ΤΙ ΑΚΡΙΒΩΣ ΕΙΝΑΙ Η ΠΟΙΗΣΗ;

- τι άλλο;

Dimitris Kanellopoulos

                                                       Deák Nándor (1883 - 1953)

The song of the cricket

As the song of the cricket
fades away
the stranger shows up.
He shakes off
the wet foliage of the night
he stands silent
in front of the dumb house.

It's the time that fatigue
changes shifts with pain.

Τhe weeping has settled down
a black serenity dresses the elves
it follows the dark passages
and the downspouts
so that duty  proud
can make its way.

Dimitris Kanellopoulos, 2009

The innereater

In memory of  Yorgos G. Karavasilis

The innereater is a tiny, voracious, evereating monster, something like a woodworm, but much more sneaky and much more dangerous. To be more precise, whereas woodworm eats only wood and, eating it makes so much noise that is easily traceable and can be dealt with, the innereater is omnivorous and completely quiet so he can't be traced or dealt with. He burrows sneaking everywhere in woods, iron, stones, glasses and humans and does his work, his horrible work, slowly, systematically, and with a rather cunning technique. For one thing, to penetrate its victims unobserved, it never opens a new hole but uses the one still existing entrances such as holes of nails or screws with no stucco on, slight scars from rust, minor cracks and crevices, a broken pimple, a badly filled tooth...
Then, inside its victim, it makes it empty from within, little by little, almost imperceptibly, leaving intact the outer part, the shell...And that 's where tragedy begins: you return home one night, a little drunk maybe, and you put the key into the keyhole and the keyhole subduces and drops quietly on the floor and your key stays bewildered inside a vast hole and you lean on the door, you don't push it , you just lean, and the door crumbles and falls with no noise on the floor, and you, not dazzled from drink but from all the unprecedented that happens in front of your very eyes, desperately seek a prop and you lean, shoulder and head onto the stile of the entry and the stile collapses and the whole house disappears in silence, not even a sound, as if somebody had emptied a poke of flour, dust, only dust which when it settles down, reveals an empty terrain where your house was, a while ago...

All these blocks of flats, all these skyscrapers who were made to be for ever and crumble for nothing, an earthquake of only two on the richter scale, are corroded by this repulsive, this sneaky insect.

Most tragic of all to meet a friend of yours in the street, a dear friend you haven't seen for years, you hug him eagerly only to realise suddenly that you hugged the absolute nothing, since he turns into dust right away, dust you shake from your clothes and you keep going, on your way, into this nightmare called life, which is in fact the kingdom of  the innereater...

Christos Armando Guezos

Ito Jakuchu (Japanese: 1716-1800) - Phoenix and Sun

The awareness of the phoenix

Ι.

And you know what?
I broke.
I had written lies once
Ι am invulnerable
but just listen to me:
I broke.
By now I have some of the awareness
of the phoenix
the fact he resurrects
is nothing compared
to his death each time
of all that preceded.
Life comes back
but memory lingers.

Christos Armando Guezos

Ι.

Και ξέρεις κάτι;

Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes
(Beware of Greeks bearing gifts)

Beware of the
people fireworks
Of those I speak with the heavenly glow
You know it
they possess the language of the angels
Beware
They always dictate you your words
before they enter the poem
As if they have just freed them from prison
Beware
They last as long as a lightning
And who 's to save you
from the darkness to come

Beware of Greeks
even those bearing love

Richard Diebenkorn, Seated Girl by a Window, 1960

 Silent iambs

Claiming the unfulfilled
no wish is longer melodic

I read your lips in silence
and you behind the glass
you gaze with that look of the sea
without finding a king
to make the myth work again

Apostrophe of the moon
curving unexpected rock
clatters of memory
and other heartbeats of the spring

What to gather with words?
what with silence?

With a little bit of I
with a mouth shut
I try a nursing
with a healing stern
and a hurt flag of the dusk

Panos Kyparissis

Τί να μαζέψεις με λέξεις;
Τί με σιωπή;

Dreamlike Eros

The way you are, a dream.
The way you are, a light shiver of the breeze
sound of a flute coming from the echanted forest
In this way stand by me.
Face touched by a wizzard of Love
Body conquered by impetuous desire.

Stand by me as long as possible.

And let the hours not wake me.
A sweet bird's singing
never let me out of your embrace.

But like this, flooded by this timeless bliss
from the one to the other sleep let me pass, the longest.

Manolis Pratikakis

Joseph Mallord William Turner, Sea View (About 1826)

With you, even head winds become fair

Love, love you are all the sunshines together; all the beaches
of home. You are the return and at the same time the everlasting
sailing— How should I get bored? I row, I dock at the
piers of your hips.

I follow Ulysses in your sea caves.

Your voice broadens my hearing 's shell, till
it becomes school presenting its ancient busts
And the classrooms new, for our words to run
carefree and become children of future people.

Manolis Pratikakis

III

All is played on a true lie
so tenderly
with skilled fingers
on the piano

all is  played
following a tune without a tune.

This can't go on  my voice on your song
somebody should tell the out of tune truth

even if we are to hush for ever.

Erina Espiritou

                                           Marc Chagall, Lovers above town

Lovers

Lovers don't share the same house
nor share the same sheets
they don't watch the news of eight together
and never worry who' s going to take out the garbage.

Lovers don't have pets
nor flowerpots on the balcony
they don't close the curtains
nor turn the lights off.

Lovers wake up at dawn
with a smile on thirsty lips
and invincible desire
they caress the words on the notepads
and then burn the pages.

Lovers never die
they live under the cinders
and wait for just a blow
a mere blow
to fire up the flame
which every single night try
to put out so desperately in vain.

Lovers make scenarios
of hatred and infidelity
when at the same time they would even sell their soul
for one "last" embrace.

Erina Espiritou

Were you a bird you would definitely be an eagle-
not so much for your royal gender
and your blonde hair
but for your beak on my liver.

Yiannis Kontos

Francisco de Goya (dark paintings) Saturn devouring his son, 1819-1823, detail

What a wild beast time is

We put it in a cage

and tame it.

Then, in the house:

it runs, it plays and falls asleep.

Then suddenly, one day , it remembers

its free life

and eats us.

Yiannis Kontos

Nikos Karouzos

                                                    Eros,  Pompei , Roman fresco

Eros is morning dew
that dries in a little while
all what's left is musical sadness
to the end of the world.
Eros exists in memory
love does not.
So we aim for immortality.

Nikos Karouzos, Oedipus tyrannised

Lies
                                                               A cheap red

Useless, on earth, the emigration
of the cranes
and the fall of the unwritten sheets.
Let the fields stay
flat and curved
and the furnishing of the white,
snow quietly layered
forming  knots-
so much the cold around you
you wouldn't talk that much.

Alexios Mainas

Nikos Dimou

Henri Lebasque, femme sur le lit, 1865

Dedication

I have forgotten the scent of the jasmine.

But exiting at night, all of a sudden,
dressed in the thin tunic of  your sweat
dressed in the golden garment of your perfume,
I fell against the scent of the jasmine as against a wall of glass.
I keep dreaming of what I lived.
The fresh body in the shadows,
the vigorous body in ecstasy
and the cry , the cry-

I love you tenderly and I love you wildly,
I walk at night dressed in your thin sweat
wreathed with the scent of  jasmine
and I foresee.

I doubt the poem, it 's poor.
I am also poor without you.
If we make a poem together
I have never written a better one.

Nikos Dimou

Tassos Korfis

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Woman at the Garden, 1873

Because

Because, when you left, the rains began,

Sudden in autumn, constant in winter

And the garden got full of leaves and migratory birds

And the ivy got deserted by snakes and lizards.

Because you were the high wall

Where I hid my face, the roots of the trees

that gave me life, the night of the scared animals,

The sinful fruit and the marigolds.

Because you were the fertile soil

That shivered at my touch.

Tassos  Korfis

Some poets' homes

                                             In memory of Yiannis Varveris

Some poets' homes are in a mess
The floor in dust
Spiders on the ceiling
Piles of dishes in the sink
It's because they are usually away
On a word safari:
In Then and in Now

In Smyrna or in Mystras
In Hell or in Heaven
In Joy or in Sorrow

And when they are back
Still tidying up, they get inspired and they work devastated
While washing up a spoon the sirup of the dead mother shines
While washing up a dish the dinner of a separation revives...

A stroll
              ...(for you)

At nights your kisses take a stroll in the gardens of my body.

They play hide and seek in the foliage,

climb up the trees and steal my fruit.

Every morning my body smells of jasmine

and bitten peach.

Stalactites

Don' t step carelessly

inside the caves of your dreams

where fragile stalactites

are constantly bleeding

the biography of your substance

They risk to break

Tread with the fair weather

Yiannis Tsigras

Pablo Picasso , the dream, 1932

And to wake up in the light.

You have fold, My Lord, the future  carefully,  like a towel,
In this way no omen reading is allowed
The cranes have already faded away in the west.
And the present remains in our hands
Like a statue's broken head
Not carved to talk,
In our era you have flown of glory
Of the toads, of the anemone, of the crazy birds.
Here is wisdom:
To fall asleep simply and quietly
Into a flourished verse
And to wake up in the light.

Thanassis Kostavaras

Christos Bokoros , She, sleeping, 1986

Only to look at you
Even if my eyes
are two sad birds.
Even if my voice gets lost
behind an anxious smile.
Just to be worth one of your looks
is enough for me.
I get transformed.
I become air to embrace you.
I become caress and whisper.
And if I don't fly away , If I don't get lost
it 's because I can't get away from you.
I am deeply rooted in our Love.
I become a tree, full of branches and leaves
in bloom with white and red flowers
I dress up only to please you
and as if full of nightingales
I sing to you.
I talk to you in another, unknown language
I send you messages from the constellations of the dream.
I touch you like a fluff;
like a gentle breeze, deriving from an unearthly light.
I the coward, the obscure, the embarrassed
I write passionate poems to you.

Thanassis Kostavaras, "Metamorphoses in Love" from the collection "Greetings"
