Grigoris Sakalis

Gustave Klimt, Danaë ,1907

In your breasts
to get lost
to take my breath
to lean, to fall asleep

What would a man want
to be happy
a warm body
a little love
no ambition
nor vanity
that tortures the soul
just a little love
and a body that asks for you
to travel inside it
to unknown lands
to places you have never been before
to die
to get reborn
to break free
every dawn
and every sunset

Grigoris Sakalis

Odysseas Elytis

                                                              Paul Gaughin, fire dance

Fire beautiful fire don't spare the logs
Fire beautiful fire don 't turn into ashes
Fire beautiful fire burn us
                                        to teach us life.

Odysseas Elytis

Oh yes I know well you dont need a ship to get wrecked
you dont need an ocean to get drowned.
So many people have  sunk in their suit
in their deep armchair,
so many forever covered by their down quilt.
Countless those drowned in their soup
in a cup of coffee
in a teaspoonful...

Let their deep sleep be sweet
sweet and  dreamless
and let it be light
the household that covers them...

Argyris Chionis  ("like the blind man in front of a mirror" 1986)

__________

Of little importance that your first love had no continuity.
Marriage and kids were not its business.
Its destination was a completely different thing .

K . Montis “First Love II”

Dinos Christianopoulos, the sea

Gustave  Caillebotte

The sea

The sea is like love
you get in and you never know if you get out.
How many men wasted their youth—
fatal dives, lethal divings
cramps, wells, unseen rocks,
whirlpools , sharks, medusas.
Alas, how can we quit bathing
if just a few get drοwned.
Alas, how can we betray the sea
cause it has ways to swallow us.
The sea is like love:
Thousands enjoy it - one has to pay

Hands

People rarely know
what to do with their hands
They give them - pretending a greeting- to others
They leave them hanging like nerveless outgrowths
Or - worst of all - they throw them in their pockets where  they stay forgotten

In the meantime so many bodies are left uncaressed
So many poems unwritten

Argyris Chionis (word landscapes, 1983)

  LOSSES

The present constantly
conquers Time fragmenting it
into human memories
pushed to oblivion.

Where they awkardly
wait (maybe for years)
to be called by a Tomorrow
which for most
won't come. Or even if it does
one day and asks for them
they won't be found.
"I forgot " we say then.

Athos Dimoulas

                                                      Francis Mortimer, Paris , 1950

When I wait for you and you dont show up
my mind goes to all those wrecked people,
those who stand for hours in a queue,
outside a door or in front of a clerk
and beg with an application in their hand
for a signature , a petty pension.
When I wait for you and you don't show up,
I become one of those wrecked people.

DANGER

what a narrow passage
the body is
a hesitation which doesn't come to an end
burrows into fear as
the desperate beast into his nest
as the  evicted  dead
into his grave
danger is gone at last
life is gone
and missed me

Beth Conklin, here on Earth. (Innocence).

So much I loved you

that I believed I had touched innocence.

And being a wolf

I came scratching at your door.

For you to come out and throw just a tender glance to me

and make my eyes clouded from happiness.

So much I loved you

that I believed I became invisible.

I became air always to be with you.

To touch you with the legends of the woods

to describe you the shadows of the sea.

And give you away the spells,

the magic spells asked for Paradise to be open.

So much I loved you

that I believed I am immortal.

That no snow can touch me , no darkness

no fear of death

can cross my warm heart.

Beside the fear that one day you may forget me

Come across me as if I never were.

As if I never were next to you like a rustling of the woods,

like a breath

like a wolf who asks nothing more

than your tender look.

So much I loved you

That I believed only if I lose you

only then can I be touched by death.

Thanassis Kostavaras

With the patience of the stone

If one day you leave
from the side of the sea
I will become a white pebble
waiting for your return

I ll wait with the patience of the stone
no matter how long it takes you.

As you know, stones can wait for years...

Kostas Stergiopoulos

the myth of Pygmalion and Galatea by Jean-Leon Gerome (c. 1890).

If it’s called this way, then it must be love

the thing that pushes me with such certainty

with such  eagerness

Dark as despair , strong as hope

Never has it run

so warm the blood into my veins.

It came  in as a tornado , split me in two

opening impetuously doors and windows.

It’s not called love, it’s called fever.

Heavy as pregnancy,

birth which doesn’t come.

You never know what’s going to be born:

demon or angel?

As  soft as a fluff, a feather, a down

on one hand it raises you

                                       to the highest top

on the other it throws you to the abyss.

You become heavier and lighter.

As you  lose the earth under your feet.

Kostas Stergiopoulos (Midnight Sun, 1991)

Δεν ξέρεις τι θα γεννηθεί: δαίμονας ή άγγελος;

LOVE AFFAIR

In the first contact we had
talked like two strangers
for things almost indifferent.

In our second, I could say almost the same
but with  a slight difference in our voice
a colouring.

Till in our third
our words were followed by pauses

...

Those sweet pauses of love...
