Tassos Korfis

 Aristidis Glykas, Fearless, 1929

S/S CLEAR LOOK

How hasty, limited is my move,
with times of fixed departures and ports of call,
with steady routes, excellent weather forecasts,
on a sea free of maritime dangers and piracy.
How disgracefully I have forgotten the worm of the open sea,
the shining of the lightning, the vertigo of the tempest,
the anticipation of the new, the sailor's hand
who used to  make me lighter from the wounds of time and rust.
Everything took its place, its distance.
My first reactions for a private, secret life,
are forgotten,
the tropical seas come no longer  as a surprise to me
with their phosphorescence. There is
something beautiful between my prow and the world
something transparent.
I can, even at this late, detect the details,
discern.

Tassos Korfis, Memories of ships

S/S CLEAR LOOK

                                                              Anton Pieck, 1932

In a low voice

Because you are the first year's  swallow to pass through
the skylight flying three times in circles on the ceiling
then all the swallows together you were
Because you are a calm side of the sea where the wave
Cuts the moon into pieces and throws it on the fine sand
Because my hands are empty like walnuts whose kernel
is eaten by pests
And you filled them with your hair and your forehead
Because I pass my fingers through your hair like the wind
passes through the cypress leaves
Because I am a country house and you come alone in the summer and
you sleep
And you wake up from time to time you turn on the lamp and
you remember
Because you do remember
That's why I love you
and the sea across us wearing out to go up and down
 the trees
As we were going downhill  Varkiza
all around coloured stones followed us

Because when I lean over a well I can see the surface
of the water and say: Here is her fate and her look
Because we watched together three yellow gupsy women covered
by the red- eyes of the drunk- twilight
And we said here is fate here are loves on the road for our daily bread

Because we watched together the three gypsy women
to come  and to  get lost
That is why I love you
And among those last birds
You are the one that escaped the pellets
Because I am full of you and in front of everything
of thought of sense of speech
There is something yours like an athlete finishing first
Because your eyelids are moss on rock cracks
That is why I love you.

D. P. Papaditsas

Georgia Triantafyllidou

                                                      Edvard Munch , Despair, 1892

From love

The world is full of hungry hearts.
So hungry
like dogs left forgotten on empty properties
neglected to be fed by their masters.
Hunger darkens the hearts
drives them wild in the night
and if a passer-by  happens to slow down
to reach out his hand through the bars
the hearts then rush
and this very hand from the side of the heart
even before it senses the pain
they tear it apart.

Georgia Triantafyllidou, A right to expectation (2008)

Max Ernst , Self Portrait, Köln 1909

The scar

The injury heals,
its lips mingle like crimpson curtains
and years after  a mark lingers in its place
a rosy scar he bows and kisses.

They all love their wounds
They hide them behind  beautiful unwrinkled cloths,
but they know on which part of their body  they flourished,
withered, ate skin and flesh of their own.

That is why they love them
and  in times of solitude, when no one sees them,
they  bow and kiss them in adoration
their deep, dark wounds.

E . Ch. Gonatas

                                                                "Only through sorrow"
                                                                       V. Leontaris

Only because I miss you I write you poetry
Only for that
Because deprivation is a bad consultant
It looks for accomplices
It browses books ruminates events with drowsy eyes
It ravages the last memories  invents ways for us to
Exist away from you while your absence cannot be endured and
By the way
Which verse can bear your look or your lips
even if we don't
Say about your fingers where your little soul barrows and
Trembles for us not to get lost
Which poem takes our breath away as the sight
of your body
Tell me which.

And you to be away

Think of life taking its own way
And you to be away,
Springs to come
with many windows wide open,
And you to be away,
Girls to arrive at the benches of the garden
in coloured dresses,
And you to be away,
Youngsters swimmimg at noon,
And you to be away,
A tree in bloom bending into the water,
Many flags waving at the balconies,
And you to be away,
...

Yiannis Ritsos

...

Nothing separates you from my body
No idea goes in between
Our fingertips fireflies in the dark
They come and go over our years
Over my skin shivering from your remembrance
And the kisses a firplace burning all
Night till the humid morning that
Knocks at the door trembling.

Tassos Porfyris, Erotic

Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940) La porte ouverte

More defeated than an expiring August
I used to wander around the village fairs and grafted my chest
with broken songs.
And the village square was an ancient  theatre.
My handkerchief dripping blood and the bulls  roaring at me
so I knocked on your door and you weren't there
only drawers left open and broken furniture
old papers dragged by the north wind οn the dirt road
your letters
carts  pulled back empty
bringing cypress cones,
your regards.

Dimitris Aggelis

Romantic Epilogue

Don't you ever read me if you haven't
followed funeral services of unknown men
or even memorials.
When you haven't guessed
the power
that renders love
equal to death.
When you haven't flown a kite on an Ash Monday
without tormenting it
by pulling its string more and more.
When you don't know when Nostradamus
smelt the flowers.
When you never went not even once
to a ceremony of the Deposition
When you are not aware of any past perfect.
If you don't love animals
and especially weasels.
If you don't hear thunders pleasantly
everywhere.
When you don't know that beautiful Modigliani
drunk at three in the morning
knocked violently on a friend's door
looking for the poems by Villion
and started to read aloud for hours
disturbing the universe.
When you call nature our mother and not our aunt.
When you don't drink the innocent water happily.
If you have not understood that Flora
is rather our era.
WET PAINT
BEWARE.
Don't you ever read me
when
you are
right.
Don't you ever read me
if you did not get into confllict with the body...
Time to go
I have no more breast.

Nikos Karouzos, 1969

Stonemason

Shapeless. As I engrave you, with your closed body

with your unformed hands, you define me.

From your night a face hardly waves.

Although in love on my knee I hold the chisel

And kneeling I seek your silence icon

inside the stone.

With all the god's breath on the neck

With all the vibration of the vacuum that shivers in my vein

For a shape. For a word. That draws the sleighs into heaven.

With your born tread you will write on the sand

our first footprint.

And from your mouth my first word

will flutter.

SUNDAY GLORY

The girl opposite in the grove
converses with desires and unbroken secrets.
Her hands show the streets
her feet set fire on the song of the grass
her eyes say good morning to the fresh light.
The sun shines on her forehead
her forehead  shines better than the sun.
Her endless hair is music
that wishes to go crazy.
As a whole she is the welcome of love
the most suitable heading for Sunday.

Pink whitewash

On the days when

a grey bird

sits by the seaweeds

its beak stretched,

you make imaginary circles like a whirling dervish.

A hot and humid afternoon in a breathless light is memory,

an unfamiliar body,

in an unknown millenium, plays solitaire

on the cardboard box of your family house.

YOU AND THE POEM

You come again and again in this room
so naked that everybody stares at you.
You torture the seats as if torturing the guilty.
I ask you to strangle those wild birds inside you
but you set them free.
You become black from your sorrow
and you come here.
For a long time you've been coming again and again.
Your knees shine in the room.
I wash  your hands your armpits with my tears.
I wash your legs till the mountains.
I offer you my most tender voice for you to get dressed.
But you go
exactly as you came
naked
so there is always a poem
to talk
about you.

Takis Sinopoulos, Seven more poems,1959

THE HAUSEN SIBLINGS

Nor I

nor my brother

are normal kids.

I turn into black rain at nights

whereas he into snow.

I hate his innocence.

he puts his finger in the mouth

he keeps whimpering,

asks annoying questions,

who ate the marmelade

why our parents are so many years asleep,

why the lady in the white collar

keeps knocking on the door.

But the most beautiful moment is

us waiting for the angel to come.

We always keep him some milk and bread

because on this earth

little children's angels

are always so tired.

Botticelli, Primavera, (detail of Zephyros and Chloris)

IF

Since morning the wind  unpinned the sky
Since morning the sun has been smoking
among the ruins.

If your face , the face shield, and that cloud
and the land landscape, and your eyes  turning suddenly
did not kill the image they had been
gazing at a little before.

If your hand was.
If your eyes.
If your hand.
If the word you were about to say.

So the wind all day.
All night the ashes of your fire.

Takis Sinopoulos, Stones, 1972

ΑΝ

the photographs of my dead.

Just a little bit longer

and they will be twice dead.

Angeliki Lalou

                                                                           William Turner

Look at how you hold yourself

At the edge of the night

Darling

And the city bows

Lights are turned on in the streets

In the houses open windows

You can still smell the spring

It feeds the desire in its scent

To surrender to you

That's what I want

In the kiss

All to become life

And let go the words

In the burning clouds

Angeliki Lalou

Lina Stefanou

                                                       Ivan Aivazovsky, moonlit night

Come tonight
fish with mouth open
scale - sword
iridescent passion
confusing the enemies

Come!

Tonight a net of light
the moon spreads upon the sea
On a silver hook cloudy eyed
love is caught and shivers.

Lina Stefanou

SENSE OF EXISTENCE

I felt so close to you
Τhis summer
Like a sea drop
Drying on your knee
That is how you were evaporating inside me

And you survived.

Vassilis Karavitis, 1982

Pasalimani 1970

Abundant cement has covered

Our childhood footsteps

The traces of the drowned

and those wrecked ashore.

At that time the sea lifts their grief

Awakes the tenants of the square

They walk out their door scared

And expose fake dreams

They leave them there without a note

And return to bed.

Those houses suit me.

That port.

That restrained sea

that has forgotten its source.

Vassilis Karavitis

Takis Sinopoulos

Sleeping Eros, Bronze statue of Hellenistic period

Every new love gives you
another face, it makes  you encounter
once again your loneliness.
When love is gone, the empty space resembles
a scene of crime.

Takis Sinopoulos, From "the poetry of poetry", 1964

                                                         Christian Schloe , The Poet

There are so many

There are so many that howl at nights
and impeccable , in the daytime, wander around us
most of them with a burning iron in their head
a red iron under the skin.

So many my brothers. I am not alone.

Anestis Evangelou, A respiration method, 1966

Tassos Livaditis

                                                             Marc Chagall, Blue Lovers

Symphony nο. 1

...People get together and  drive apart
and get nothing from one another.

Because love is the toughest way to get to know each other.

Because people, comrade , start to exist at the moment
they find a place
in the life of others.

And then you realised why the desperate
become the best rebels.

And we stay defendless all of a sudden, like a winner
before death
or a defeated facing eternity.
...

Tassos Livaditis  (fragment from Symphony No.1)

Markos Meskos

Catrin Welz-Stein , Memories

My future weapon

In the eyes of the drowned the boats
are an endless nostalgia − your voice, the sea,
is no good to me.

I can't hear nightingales. For you little North Wind
I 'll think about it twice next time
I wish to stay up under your trees.

I stand against you ( I dream, I wake, I bargain
for the good, I ache and grieve with you)
it isn't difficult to find
which hour of your voice suits me.

(For now poetry is soul)

Markos Meskos, Poems Black Forest I, 2011
