Pantelis Boukalas

John Collier, Pomps and Vanities 1917

DRESIRE

I want to tell your eyes. I hush.
How can you tell sweetness, how saltiness,
if they happen to co-exist. I learn the sea
from the beginning , from the beginning the fire.

I want to tell your hands. They touch me
as if death slows down, as if time restarts.
I want to tell your teeth. They define me.
they cut and grind me. Pain makes me complete.

I want to tell your lips. The way they nod,
the way they call me, how they capture me
the way they contain fear, how they make love, how they flood
Whatever I say, I call your words, they own me.

In love our hands multiply
our eyes become a starry sky
the body a universe ever dilating
and the world becomes  a pathetic mind's  chaos.
In love words get heavy and beautiful.
And desire always shivers like a thirsty dresire .

Pantelis Boukalas, "Verbs", Agra 2009

Françoise de Felice, le kimono noir
VI

You leave
like a lotus flower
in the wind

 I come and go
less every time
-- I even sold your kimono

it wasn't worth a verse.

Yerassimos Lykiardopoulos, Mandarin's poems, 2002

VI

Darkseeker

You flow within me.
As rich as the night.
And with the sun
I direct in the market
the inner panther
the self-devouring
Cause love is cancer
multiplying you
to erase you.

Kαι με τον ήλιο

Kostas Stergiopoulos

                                                                     Christos Bokoros
ΙV.

The tempest resides in your naked breasts,
with the palpitation of the earth your heart beats
and with the juice of the trees your blood swells.
You know how to sail on the wing of the wind.

Moonstruck you look for me at midnight·
you look for the sky on earth, you ask for the earth in the sky.
But most of all you know the night's misteps.
You know how to hunt birds and clouds,
when I steal you from another's hidden vineyard,
you know the secret path of love.

I lean to listen to  the earth and to your heart.

Kostas Stergiopoulos, Transformations of the idol, Midnight sun, 1991

ΙV.

if it starts to rain as I am unused to loneliness I 'll slip and get drowned.

Leonidas Kakaroglou

Gustave Caillebotte, the orange trees, 1878

It's spring again
Everybody is in the streets
I don't know what they are looking for
But my eyes hurt
From so much light
That's why I close them
And I can't
Find you

Leonidas Kakaroglou

Να σε βρω

I. The truth

On a night of 1914
Kafka dreamt of
the body

of Felice
unseen in the mirror
to cumber leaning
on the visible one.

II. The truth which is not completed

Maybe because he wrote to her
at least once a day.
Need is another thing
we take it for love
it comes gradually as a chain
made of pleasant links.

Some moments still flood
the others.
We live on our own
but it is said that most of us
will never regain
sufficiency.

Alexios Mainas

                                              Collage Magritte, Dangerous liaison boudoir

"All for an empty tunic, all for a Helen"

Her phantom throughout the centuries
lingers, stops
in empty tunics, she puts them on
and a series of Helens rise
greek Helens
eternally swinging
between a Paris and a Menelaus.
They never settle down.
An irrelevant, winged God
interferes and captures them.
Then he abandons them
in a random Egypt.

In exile and misunderstood
burdened with such a fatal duty
-so many wars and so many dead-
endure in silence
their permanent curse,
beauty!

Angeliki Sidira, Bidirectional attraction, 2011

Christos Laskaris

Evelyn De Morgan , Flora, 1894

Reading a poem

I was reading a poem about spring
when I saw her
coming from far:
half woman, half dream.
She was heading down the path
wreathed with cherry blossoms.
Just then I realised how powerful poems are.

The tenth
The ultimate muse
I have fallen down by the high
Lefkada's  cliffs.

My separate limbs
Got enfolded in harmony
Around dead lovers
Palimpsest me,  fragment.

Ι was spelled by national papers
Pious monks shivering
Filled with me  the gaps
Of their leaking walls.
Archeologists, philologues, conservators
Try to assemble me
Adjusting  me
Wings.

I never jumped into the void
It was just
The moon that hid
And I sleep alone.

Now that
It seldom rains during winter
I keep your umbrella
Stored in the closet
And I never open it anymore
I am afraid that if I get fooled
And open it
Old rains that had made it wet
Will drift me away
Into the stream
Of your absence

C. P. Cavafy, On board the ship

John Singer Sargent, Head of a man, ca. 1875

On board the ship

It certainly resembles him that small,
pencil sketch of his.

Quickly made on the ship's deck;
a charming afternoon.
The Ionian Sea all around us.

It looks like him. Still I remember him more handsome.
He was sensual to passion,
and that lit his expression.
So much more handsome he appears to me
now that my soul recalls him, out of  Time.

Out of Time. All these things are very old —
the sketch, the ship, the afternoon .

C. P. Cavafis, Poems 1897-1933, edit. Icaros

Aπ’ τον Καιρό.

15 HIPPOCRATOUS ST.

Wearing again the same body
You have forgotten  to button up
The wound in question
Challenging   the past
To interfere

But this stands waterproof
On the opposite bank
It does not accept the arbitration of time
It withdraws and its level
Constantly lowers in our life
Leaving our bodies uncovered

And our eyes
Fail to meet
Bridges that missed reaching the other end
And are left like hands stretching out
Βut alas times catches up with them
Αnd not a drop of embracement
Ιs left to the touch.

And on the point you 'd say we would be covered
By a river, an impetuous flowing passion
That would sweep the barriers
The mouth now dry
And our words drained

What were you doing in Hippocratous street
with your hair loose?
A swarm of fears
Crossing the stillness

The day was late on your face
And your fingers were left forgotten
On my coat
As if looking for my button

God was late to move
Into another plan
It got dark
And the sun still there
an intruder  standing

Light at half mast

Thomas Ioannou,15 Ηippocratous st. , 2011

Με τα μαλλιά σου λυτά;

                                      Parviz Payghamy, wild flower

Even if you all ravaged my stadium

Even if you all  ravaged my stadium my heart is

a red brick and a costruction material
like a harmonica in the demolition

Even if this field is parched by the sun

I 'll become fresh fruit flower dusk
making your childish eyes blossom.

Even if it rains in the small station I 'll drag

your music into the ruins
like light spent in the sink.

Nikos-Alexis Aslanoglou, Poems for a summer, 1963

Faidros Barlas

Achilleas Drougas : In search of Dionysus

LEOPARDS

We burrowed frightened into our homes
when the leopards
made their appearance in town.

Wild , thirsty for blood, looked
bleary-eyed at the shut doors-
if somebody showed up, to tear him apart.

But slowly— maybe  the meat
which hung abundant on the hooks
of the abandoned butcher shops
soothing their primitive,
voracious hunger —
maybe the beautiful sunshine of our town
taking profit, lolling,
lying in the middle of empty streets –,
leopards have begun,
more or less, to get more tamed.

One or two , took courage , they approached them,
fed them with delicacies, kept for such
times of need, at home.

Leopards have eaten them—
licked their snout,
stretching themselves.

"It's obvious", somebody said,
"they won't eat us, if they know
that we 'll throw them treats. "

In this way, in a while, we all took liberties·
we opened doors and windows wide,
crossing  streets and squares
 men and leopards together.

You could only tell by the skin.

Οf course, we stepped aside at their sight,
we offered them the best meat,
the finest selection of charcuterie,
we declared , loudly, to each other,
that animals more beautiful than these,
whose presence honoured our city,
have never been  seen before in our life!

Some , once, taking too much courage,
while watching the leopards getting idle —
from the abundant food thrown to them,
the sunshine, the rest and leisure —
have thought that it would be convenient to chase them away.

But the leopards have torn them to thousand pieces,
before  even laying a hand on them.

Since then, we kept it in mind,
we had it printed in every zoology book
we learn it by heart everyday like a prayer:

"Leopards never harm anybody,
 unless you harm them·
never lay a hand on them,
 and you won't get harmed."

All of us by now, willingly and consentiously,  feed them,
willingly and consentiously  we give them treats
and whoever has a soft and skillful hand
caresses their back or their snout.

And the leopards — who would believe it?—
rub themselves pleased on them,
leaving little groans of pleasure.

So — we came to a conclusion —  this is the way
for someone to treat leopards•
and now we are teaching it to our children,
so  they can teach it
to the children of their children:

teach them to love the leopards,
to respect the leopards,
to feed the leopards,
since forever, as we know, leopards —
beyond illness or evil! —
will be the  masters in our town.

Angeliki Lalou

                                           Lionel Walden, Night train, (1861-1933)

We count losses

We file defeats

One after another

We spend our time

On lonely platforms

Always waiting

For the wrong train

Usually delayed

A lifetime and two days

Suitcases are kept in the customs

Or forgotten in the missing luggage

And the hands lost  in pockets

Hiding  our embarrassment

When there is nothing left to hold anymore

Just sand on the fingers

To build the castles of memories

In every step we take

And to have them ruined

As soon as we turn our back

In our absentia

Angeliki Lalou

Kostas Stergiopoulos

                                                        Christian Schloe, Night flight

The Stranger

In our darkest depths
somebody holds the key of our existence,
always lost, solitary and enigmatic,
with memory older than the world, loaded
with all our wounds and remorses.

Sad, teasing or even happy
invisible  he reigns over us:
he receives the outer impact
and gives the answer.
He reminds us of the past
and foretells the future.

Sometime , however,  he leaves us unaware.
And when ignorant we plan new outings
he leans by then  exhausted, sleepy
and he is ready to migrate, showing no concern
for our own ephemeral  earthy plans.

Kostas Stergiopoulos, The shadow and the light, 1960

Carl Vilhelm Holsoe:

                                          Carl Vilhelm Holsoe

Furtive act

She was beautiful in her vagueness
the one keeping me
between darkness and light,
where night and day keep in balance,
with half her face in the light and the other half in the dark.

Beautiful, with undefined extensions.

As if it breaks dawn in winter
a bright day in mid-January,
and sometimes, as if "on the other
side of the death notices".

A furtive act,
that sometime comes to an end
like life.

Kostas Stergiopoulos, When there is still time, 2008

σαν τη ζωή.

Aggeliki Eleftheriou

Peter Vilhelm Ilsted , 1909

When poets don't write they waste away
They swear to themselves
That the cause is different
A forthcoming body illness
Maybe the loves that have faded away
They put their room in order
Old keys and receipts
Useless those keys
And those receipts can recast no debt
They fold their clothes
Like the priests do their vestments
They walk slowly carefully
Like old tourists
Aways in order
They reach no paper anymore
White frightens them

Aggeliki Eleftheriou, I will smoke, 2004

Michalis Ganas

Ivan Aivazovski, The Black Sea at night, 1879

Oh my night don't change
Keep your black safe
Keep the jasmin in the teeth
And the women we loved
Lull them in fresh shadows
So we can have a place to hide.

Michalis Ganas, The smoker's sleep, Poems 1978-2012

What I fear the most is
us to become married
comfortable in fluffy slippers
and browse asset accounts on the veranda
our bed to become just a piece of furniture
and our kisses peckings
to carry umbrellas when it rains
and the clock
at the right time
without truancy
without yearnings
you to become abundant
instead of missing
What I fear the most
is us from gang to become government.

Orestis Alexakis

Edgar Degas , Melancolie, c.1869

And don't ask why I am sad

It 's because behind your silence travel

the caravans

of the forgotten

It 's because in your eyes shake

the shadows of the dead

the shapes of the beloved

It's because you look like a travel to the infinite

It s because you reveal new paths

It's because you shut

the trap doors

and you dawn in the new miracle

It's because in your glow I awake

as if I believe

I still exist

It's because I owe you so much sky

And I have nothing but a little soil

Orestis Alexakis, the Registrar,1989
